You Can Help Stomp Out The Little Known Shoe Tax
Yes, Shoe Tax.
Did you know that shoelovers unknowingly pay a 40% shoe tax at the cash register?
Who knew?
On November 15, 2007, U.S. Senators, Gordon Smith (R-OR), Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Pat Roberts (R-KS) formally introduced the bi-partisan Affordable Footwear Act of 2007 (S. 2372), to eliminate the import tariffs, collectively known as the shoe tax, on all lower- to moderately-priced footwear as well as all children's shoes, or about 60 percent of all shoes sold in the United States.
A Few Shoe Facts
- Americans bought about 2.4 billion pairs of shoes in 2006.
- The top shoe suppliers were China, Italy, Vietnam, Brazil, and Indonesia.
- In 2006 the U.S. government collected approximately $1.9 Billion in shoe taxes.
